The principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, can be used for all types of learners, in all settings, and for many different purposes. ABA is considered the gold standard treatment and an evidence-based treatment for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Our mission at Family Nest ABA Therapy is to expand the use of ABA for helping individuals with ASD, as well as those with developmental disabilities, behavioral challenges, and even those without disabilities who may be struggling with learning new skills.
ABA therapy is used to determine the functions of an individual’s behavioral and learning challenges and employs specific strategies to address these challenges by using an Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) approach to target and improve specific behaviors. The goal is to identify the function of the target behavior that is occurring and to teach an alternative response. Additionally, ABA therapy is used to teach language and communication skills, daily living skills, employment skills, social skills, and academic skills through specific teaching strategies that are unique to ABA.
Definition:
Applied behavior analysis is the process of systematically applying interventions based upon the principles of learning theory and behavior science to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree (Baer, Wolf & Risley, 1968).
